Charleston is one of the fastest gainers in technology jobs. Since 2000, over 1,000 jobs have been created in the IT sector. With almost 6,000 technology intensive jobs, Forbes ranks Charleston as the Number 7 Best City for Technology Jobs. (June 2009).

Charleston has an organization specifically dedicated to the growth of knowledge-based companies - the Charleston Digital Corridor. The Digital Corridor offers these companies a comprehensive set of value-added services specifically tailored to their needs.

Charleston's Digital Corridor companies consistently have career openings for high-wage, technical positions. The number of opportunities open from just over 15 companies typically exceeds 175 jobs.

While Charleston retains the culture and feel of a small town, it has the infrastructure, lifestyle and human capital of a larger metropolitan area. Because of these unique characteristics, Forbes ranks Charleston the 8^th smartest city in the world, defining “smart” as a function of a city's infrastructure and livability, along with economic fundamentals.

Wages for Charleston Digital Corridor companies are consistently higher than other sectors in the state and regional economy. At $83,636 reported in 2009, average wage levels at Charleston Digital Corridor Companies are more than double the state and regional levels.

The Charleston area has been ranked nationally as a top place for businesses. Next Generation Consulting ranked Charleston as the 2^nd best place for young professionals to live and work (June 2009).
